Not so tariff-ic news for prospective PlayStation purchasers
With current events moving very fast and extremely furious, Sony has announced that it is being forced to raise the prices of its PlaySattion 5 consoles. The change takes place for Europe, the UK, Australia & New Zealand. This comes as the company already raised prices last year or so in several areas, and points to the ramifications of inflation and the tariff-based trade war. It sucks for anyone trying to get into console gaming (or any gaming, for that matter as prices are going up everywhere).
The new (non-PS5 Pro) prices are as follows (Middle East and Africa prices are in line with these):
Europe | PS5 Digital Edition – €499.99 (No pricing changes for the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive) |
UK | PS5 Digital Edition – £429.99 (No pricing changes for the standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive) |
Australia | Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – AUD $829.95 PS5 Digital Edition – AUD $749.95 |
New Zealand | Standard PS5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive – NZD $949.95 PS5 Digital Edition – NZD $859.95 |
Surprisingly, the disc drive attachment is actually DECREASING in price a bit, just in case you want to add that later.
Europe | €79.99 |
UK | £69.99 |
Australia | AUD $124.95 |
New Zealand | NZD $139.95 |
Anyhoo, this now puts the price of the digital-only PS5 above the base Switch 2 (£395.99) in the UK and even with its Mario Kart-packed in version (£429.99), and only 10 euros less for the bundle (€509.99) for the rest of Europe.
No word (yet) on if this change will come to the US and Canada. The change occurs on April 14.
