Nintendo delays Switch 2 preorders in US due to Trump tariffs

We hope you weren’t intending on taking time off to preorder Nintendo’s next console.

That’s because due to the tariffs announced by President Trump the last few days amid an increasingly dumb trade war, Nintendo has delayed the preorder date of the Switch 2 from April 9th to an unspecified date. The Switch 2 is still scheduled to launch on June 5, but now everything is probably back on the table in terms of pricing.

The news comes via Gamespot, who received a statement directly from Nintendo. It reads:

“Pre-orders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025 in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions. Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.”

The console was set to open preorders in the US next week, on April 9, but now that’s on hold. The price is currently set at $450 for the console and a separate $500 bundle with Mario Kart World. Nintendo has been rumored to have been stockpiling Switch 2 console units in the US for a while now, but that may not be enough for what will surely be a hot commodity. That said, adjusting the price would likely be a PR nightmare and exacerbate the backlash that the company is already having for the pricing of some of the games (Mario Kart World at $80 being the big one). Very likely the company will have to eat the tariff adjustment (northwards of 40%!) hoping that things settle down later in the year. It’s also likely that they’re having high level conversations with the major retailers to work out updated deals and plans.

It’s going to be a rough time in the games industry. Buckle up.
