Mario Kart World takes us to the open road on the Switch 2 in June

The next Mario Kart brings a massive world and new features to the series

Our favorite kart game series is probably Mario Kart (sorry, Garfield Kart) and our favroite racing game series is probably Forza Horizon. So, what happens when you shove both of them together? A pretty amazing-looking new entry for Nintendo.

Mario Kart World is being billed by the company as an open racer, allowing players to drive virtually everywhere. The game will connect its usual tracks across a giant map, allowing players to head from one course to another and traversing biomes. Players can stay on the course, head off road, grind rails and even bounce across vertical walls and drive into the back of a semi truck to sneak past others. Weather conditions and time of day will factor into the racing, too, so that each go could be unique.

Another big change is the bump to 24 concurrent racers, making for double what the last entry, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, could handle. Alongside kart designs, players can also unlock new outfits for each character.

Motion controls will also be available, satisfying your 4 year old nephews who just want to throw Blue Shells.

The game will release with several modes.

Knockout Tour will focus on a long “continental” race from one point to another, crossing through 5 checkpoints along the way. Players will need to remain within the alotted time to stay in the race, so think of it as sort of a Mario Kart royale mode.

Free Run mode will allow full free driving around the world, scenic trips with friends, and even photo opportunities.

And then, obviously, there will be a Grand Prix mode in which players can do a more traditional race cup series.

The game will launch alongside the Switch 2 on June 5, and will retail at a chonky $79.99.

A special Mario Kart World Direct will take place on April 17 with more information.
