GameCube games coming to Nintendo Switch Online for Switch 2

Back in black… err, purple… with GameCube on the Switch 2

We were really, really hoping for Wind Waker’s HD iteration to arrive on the Switch — we’d been led to believe that it was done! It was coming! Well, it is, kinda. Except it’s the OG version of the game, not the new one.

Nintendo has revealed that GameCube games are the next big drop on those Nintendo Switch Online service, but exclusive to the Switch 2. During today’s big Direct, the company revealed that they’ll be adding the new platform as early as the console’s launch day. On that launch day, players can expect F-Zero GXThe Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker and SOULCALIBUR II, with plenty of others dropping at a regular pace (we hope).

Like the existing NSO on Switch, games can be played locally or online, with GameShare and GameChat, and will include better image quality & higher resolution than original versions. So, Wind Waker will be better, but not the REAL better game. Ugh.

Anyhoo, other games eventually arriving are:

  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
  • Pokemon XD: Gale of the Darkness
  • Super Mario Strikers
  • Chibi-Robo
  • Luigi’s Mansion
  • Pokemon Colosseum

AND! Perhaps the coolest aspect of the new NSO offerings is that a wireless purple GameCube controller will be available at launch, too, for NSO members.

Nintendo Switch Online: GameCube launches on June 5 alongside the Switch 2.

Here’s hoping that Super Smash Bros Melee is eventually coming, too.
