Who will win the BALATRO OF THE YEAR at the Game Awards?
The annual Game Awards are upon us in just about three weeks, and now the nominees have been announced — and surprisingly, no one has a single problem with any of them! It’s great! We’re all in sync. A+.
Just kidding, this is the Internet and this is 2024 in the Year of Luigi, so folk around the globe are having a tizzy. It’s okay, though, because that’s what these awards and conversations are about: what is a great game, and why is it worthy of my time?
This year has been an interesting one from game releases. We’re finally in the post-COVID dev cycle, so most of the games being nominated now started life in 2020 and after. It’s a whole new gaming world!
The nominations for each category include AAA games and indies, social darlings and singular experiences. In the GOTY category alone we see the full gambit of genres:
- Astrobot
- Balatro
- Black Myth: Wukong
- Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree
- Final Fantasy VII Rebirth
- Metaphor Refantazio
We’re sure that your favorite game didn’t show up in many of these, or maybe it did! Who knows, but that’s the point. The Game Awards nominations and selections come from a knowledgeable committee of Games Industry individuals, so there has been some long hard looks at the quality of each.
The full nominations can be found on TheGameAwards.com
Public voting is open now. The Game Awards take place on December 12 and will be streamed globally across a variety of platforms.
