With Fallout on Prime still so hot, Gunnar has released its Vault 33 themed glasses and Dali takes them for a spin in his review.
A fashionable spin, rather.
Back in 2020, in the midst of staring at my computer screen for much more prolonged periods, my eyes started to get really, really tired. I had always worn glasses, but I finally buckled and picked up some gamer glasses — a pair of Gunnars. They did a good job of reducing the stress on my eyeballs, so I kept them around as a part of my regular rotation of visual help. That pair looked like my actual glasses because I didn’t really need any style when I was working at home, just function.
It’s 2024 now and I’m in the office again for most of my week. Style is way more important to me (I want to look pretty fresh in front of my coworkers, buddy) so while those glasses are still fine they’re not fiiiiine. I’ve never really been into the idea of pop culture-branding on things that I need to use often, but when I saw Gunnar’s Fallout-themed glasses that typical notion went out; I wanted to try these on, I wanted to wear them. And I’m glad I did, because not only do they still work as Gunnars but they also look pretty dope in an office.
The glasses carry that retro-futuristic theme, with a “lite” goggle aesthetic to push them off of our face a bit. It’s what I imagine Augmented Reality glasses will feel like whenever they will manifest. The frames are metallic and light, and the yellow tint on the lenses isn’t overpowering. They don’t feel like the most high-end pair — metal frames tend to bend a little easier, or show a permanent bend — but it fits with the Fallout on Amazon Prime theme and my coworkers are definitely taking notice at how just over the top they look without being over the top. And because they’re metal they always stay comfortably cool. The only gripe I actually have with them is the looseness in the noseguards. Because these are metal frames, and because of how the guards are attached to the usual little stalks, they tend to rattle when I move the glasses on and off or set them on a table. It’s a little annoyance that ends up happening in far too many pairs of glasses.
But that’s basically it. The Gunnar X Fallout on Prime glasses are great, especially for fans of the series (the fantastic blue storage case they are packaged with is ridiculously awesome). They’re stylish, they function as intended, and though they may not prevent mutants from attacking you in the Wasteland they’ll definitely be able to keep the blazing sun out.
