A stunning piece of tech brings back a pretty decent console

The N64 was my go-to party console in college. Many a night was spent playing Mario Kart, Goldeneye and Mario Party with my roommates and neighbors — it really was the birth of console multiplayer gaming as we know it. But that era eventually left us, and the N64 went into the backburner. Whenever Nintendo has included N64 games in its virtual console or Nintendo Switch Online they’ve never felt true to the originals. The quality, the emulation… it’s just not the same.

The Analogue 3D aims to change all that. The console, a device that plays all N64 games to 100% viability, is now available for preorder with a release coming on the 21st of October (next week). It’s a fantastic-looking device, with a modern take on the N64’s aesthetics, that emulates the games accurately and upscales to 4K for modern TVs.

It’s region-free, too, so the carts from the US, Europe and Japan all work. An SD slot is there, too, and WIFI for updates. Like the original, the Analogue 3D has 4 controller ports allowing for plenty of action, and is compatible with the original wired controllers as well as modern Bluetooth controllers, including 8bitdo’s take on the N64 classic.

Whew, it looks great! There were not a ton of N64 games released, compared to other platforms, but it remains a great console for nostalgic purposes. And hey, if we can whip our family in MK64 again then we’re all for it.

The Analogue 3D runs for $249.99 and can be preordered today on their website.
