Drop Duchy mixes town building with Tetris and we’re digging the vibe

Taking the Ls as Ws

I’m a Tetrisaholic, and will play literally anything that looks like the block puzzler. They all usually rely on theming the blocks or music or backgrounds, but it’s been the same game and doesn’t really innovate. Oh well, I like them blocks.

And then Arcade Crew’s Drop Duchy comes along and blows my mind.

Hello! Tetris, but the blocks are parts of a town that need to be aligned and used for resources, citizens, defense and offense? And it’s a card collection game? And a roguelike?

HELLO.

Yes, Drop Duchy is all of those things, throwing an admittedly neat hook into the block puzzle theme by making us collect pieces and use them to develop towns. There are even battles in which our towns, based on how we arrange them, can engage for dominance or defense in the battle against other kingdoms. And it all looks pretty cool.

Anyhoo, it’s a simple idea that I think may have a lot of depth based on what we collect and how we set up our cards. Plus it’s a Tetris, so, ya know where my heart’s at.

Drop Duchy arrives on Steam later this year.
