Taking inspiration and giving Hell
Dread Delusion a game that’s inspired by two very specific games: King’s Field and Morrowind. It’s a very opaque, esoteric kind of first person experience. And it’s sick.
One of the cool hooks in Dread Delusion happens when we walk around and talk to people, have to find our way around this kind of messed up world. It’s a world that’s been separated by gods and wars, with different islands separating it, and we kind of start at the bottom. We’re a religious prisoner who is just trying… We’re a part of a prison gang and need to accomplish a specific quest, falling into the chosen one sort of trope.
There’s just a lot in here. It’s very fun if we like the kinds of RPGs that ask us questions like, “hey, go find this guy. He’s camping in a red tent.” And then we go find him. And then a new quest kicks off and things go deeper. It’s one of those games that we push ourselves to grind and walk around and explore. It’s classically based, from quests and themes to appearance.
And it looks really great, with just beautiful nostalgic polygonal visuals and textures in 60 FPS. We can even flip settings on and off to make the game look and feel more like some of its PS1 era influence. It triggers that nostalgia part of my brain that thinks it remembers this, even though it’s new.
Dread Delusion is a throwback action RPG that’s modern in all the right ways.
