Revealing news about the Switch 2!… is not here yet.
For the first time, Nintendo has revealed that a successor to the Switch is officially being developed.
And they did so in the most Nintendo way possible: through the kind of Tweet you’d hear as a nuke was about to be dropped.
“This is Furukawa, President of Nintendo. We will make an announcement about the successor to Nintendo Switch within this fiscal year. It will have been over nine years since we announced the existence of Nintendo Switch back in March 2015. We will be holding a Nintendo Direct this June regarding the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the latter half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”
This is the first, real acknowledgment of the Switch 2’s existence, albeit that’s all we’ll be getting for a while. Nintendo still wants to sell the current OG console, so it won’t be saying anything else for a long while.
Except that it kind of did.
During the Investor Q&A when asked about if the successor is a completely new device, Furukawa replied that it was the “Switch next model”. This could mean a lot of things, like an evolution of the current Switch with more power, or continuing the actual Switch line, much like Microsoft and Sony have done with their devices. The closest thing Nintendo has done to this has been to go from the Gamecube to the Wii, which were very similar from a technical standpoint.
Anyhoo, we’ll find all of this out before April 1, 2025. At least there’s that!
