[Insert really bad Matthew McConaughey joke attempt here]
I’m not sure I’ll ever understand what “time dilation” is, but developer Archetype sure is betting on it being neat enough to base a game around. At the Game Awards the team revealed their new project, Exodus, that will focus on the idea, using it as a basis for how things will affect each other.
According to Wikipedia, time dilation is “the difference in elapsed time as measured by two clocks, either due to a relative velocity between them (special relativity), or a difference in gravitational potential between their locations (general relativity).” I don’t know exactly what that means IRL, but in the game it will have something to do with how the actions and choices of players in their explorations will have long standing consequences across space and time to the future generations of humanity.
“In EXODUS, humanity has fled a dying Earth, finding a new home in a hostile galaxy – here, we are the underdogs fighting for survival. As The Traveler, you are humanity’s last hope. Your job is to steal alien weapons and technology from the most powerful beings in the universe, the Celestials – humanity’s greatest enemy. But there’s a catch – Time Dilation. As Travelers on interstellar missions, days for you are decades back home. The sacrifices you make to protect your loved ones create unpredictable consequences that change your world — reshaping the future. Returning home, you confront the consequences of your choices. In Exodus, the outcome of those ch oices manifests at a massive level, compound ing over generations.”
There are also aliens, and shooting of said aliens, and a big narrative explaining why aliens will be shot at — and Matthew McConaughey will have a role in the game, too.
There’s no release date yet, but when it does release it’ll land on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
For fans who are interested, the devs have put together a series of prologues telling the backstory of the game world and its characters.
