This PSP is not a PSP
I had to double check to make sure I wasn’t misreading the title in Sony’s latest hardware-focused blog post. The PSP! Wait, wait. It’s not a PlayStation Portable, it’s a PlayStation PORTAL. Oh man, naming conventions.
Anyhoo, the previously announced Project Q has a full name and a price, and will launch in the latter half of this year for $199.99.
That’s actually not a bad price! For real.
The “remote player” will connect to the PS5 via WiFi and allow for remote play within a home or EVEN AWAY FROM THE HOUSE — just hope that your PS5 is turned on at home and whatever duct taped string of networks you’re on has high enough speeds.
It’ll have haptic feedback and a 3.5mm audio port, and stream up to 1080p on an 8″ LCD screen. It’ll also use the new PlayStation Link wireless audio protocol allowing for the new headset and earbuds to connect for optimal sound and reduced latency. And it won’t be able to play EVERY game, either. Because it’s so heavily reliant on the PS5, it can’t actually piggyback streams; that is, we won’t be able to stream PlayStation Plus Premium (cloud-based) games to the device. Sorry, you’ll have to play those on the TV set, bub.
The device is actually fairly barebones, and doesn’t seem to add any real gameplay bonuses outside of being able to stream video to a device that’s not your TV. That means that it’s not a Wii U/second screen concept, but rather a replacement for those of us who have been streaming from the PS5 to our phones or laptops in our house when we also want to watch Bluey on the set.
Preorder info will go live soon.
