Final Fantasy XIV FanFest has come and gone, the dust has settled, but not my sleeping pattern.
Final Fantasy XIV in its current form is still a beautiful game. But for being a 10-year-old game, I think it’s time for a graphics update. And the team at Square Enix agrees. At FanFest the developer announced some much-needed graphical updates to the game.
Naoki Yoshida, Producer and Director, said,
You’ll notice that the 7.0 areas are kind of prettier than the previous areas. But in the old areas things like the shadow improvements and the lighting will be automatically applied. It will take some time to add those extra objects I mentioned, buy in terms of visuals it will look better. [Plants and grass] will automatically be applied to the system. We can’t automatically increase the poly account avaiable in the game….Grapes, grapes, we must mention the grapes. I just need you to know that we cannot give any more polygons to the grapes.

Interestingly one of the biggest pops during FanFest was the announcement of the 2-dye system to the game. Players will be able to use 2 dyes per gear piece. It’s some of the biggest feedback that the team has been receiving and they will be able to deliver it with this update.
Another option that they are adding is the ability for players to wear glasses while having headgear on. Object and furnishing limits will be increased as well.
Yoshida has come out to say that while the graphics update will introduce a number of improvements, the updates won’t come to the game all at once. The updates will start with Dawntrail and work their way down to ARR. The goal for Square Enix is to eventually update all of the gear and areas in the game.
With the upcoming changes come new system updates for PC players. They do however plan on continue supporting the PlayStation 4 version of the game. The list below is the new system requirement.
The fifth expansion of Final Fantasy XIV, Dawntrail, is set to be released in the Summer of 2024.
