The blood is coming *AT* you this time
I’m going to be honest: I don’t care about Amid Evil all that much. The conversation around boomer shooters almost always circles around how the games look and how they capture that 90s feel. And that’s cool and all, but game quality isn’t always about capturing nostalgia.
That being said, Amid Evil does solid work in taking an almost Heavy Metal aesthetic and mixing it with great controls. Translating first person shooters into virtual reality typically leads to less than ideal outcomes, even those originally based on great games. Which is why I’m genuinely surprised by how well this game plays in VR.
Amid Evil VR is fast, it’s not particularly disorienting, and it has a good aiming capabilities. It even has a legitimate sense of depth. Out of the gate it didn’t have teleport travel, but it’s so smooth that the movement doesn’t induce vomit. Yay!
It’s a terrific translation of a boomer shooter to VR, and one of the better first person shooters we can play in VR. That being said, it’s still sort of a novelty — it doesn’t gain anything by being in VR, especially if we’ve already played the game, and if we’re looking for a boomer shooter we should probably just play it in 2D — but there’s enough care put into this that we can appreciate what it accomplishes.
