DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos review

DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos review

The best DC video game of the year, probably

Writing a game based on comics is hard. You have decades of lore across multiple media types and comic fans are pedants when it comes to that kind of thing. A lot of them are bad games with worse writing. At best most of the time you get good games with bad writing. (Several recent comic games fall into this criteria.) But a game I was recently given access to kinda bucks the trend in a unprecedented way I didn’t expect. Devs, if you’re reading this, just know that me calling this game a Perfect 7 on this site is high honor.

Justice League: Cosmic Chaos is hilarious. It’s a perfectly written goofy little game that is for kids but plays in the sandbox of decades of lore to an incredible degree. It’s not just silly for the sake of being silly, it’s silly within the restraints of characterizations. It’s genuinely a favorite comic game ever in terms of its writing, and does it better than any Lego game if you ask me.

The gameplay is fine. It’s standard isometric brawler stuff with pseudo dungeon crawling and upgrades and (some really obscure) costumes, and it’s not going to wow you but you’ll also be impressed with the complexity and difficulty that’s here in what is obstinately a children’s game.

Did I mention that I love this weird comic book game? Because I love this weird comic book game.
