And coming to Xbox, too!
I absolutely loved NuChallenger’s Treachery in Beatdown City when it first launched back in 2020. On the surface it looks like a nostalgia-infused beat’em up that could have appeared on the NES alongside Double Dragon and TMNT 2. It’s filled with references to the era, with an almost in-your-face presentation of everything that made gaming of that time good and weird.
However, just a short bit of time with the game reveals that it’s more than just a retro love fest; it’s actually commentary on social issues and representation wrapped with an excellent tactical turn-based fighting gameplay mechanism and a soundtrack that bops.
And now, there’s more on the way — a lot more!
At the recent 2023 New York Videogame Critics Circle awards, DLC was announced for the game. Titled “Ultra Remix” (because OF COURSE IT IS) the new DLC extends the length of the game by over 3x the originals, adding 8 new maps and 80 new enemies, new movesets, and new music from Inverse Phase. That’s A LOT.
Current owners of the game will get the DLC for free prior to its April 27th launch, but it will cost extra for anyone picking it up afterward. And, it’s officially coming to Xbox as well, joining the Switch and Steam versions.
