Not a remake, not a port, but somewhere in between
After a leak by Sony itself earlier in the day ruined the big Summer Game Fest 2022 reveal, the much rumored (Hi, Jeff!) Last of Us remake has formally been revealed. The Last of Us Part 1 is perhaps not a full remake, at least not in the vein of the recent Resident Evils of Final Fantasy VII. And it’s not a remaster or a port of the game that was on PS3 and then on PS4 (and playable on PS5). No, the new Last of Us is something in between.
Consider it a rebuild, then. The game will utilize the original’s motion capture and animations before compression, as well as integrate all new lighting, updated controls and accessibility features, and a lot of PlayStation 5 effects — think haptic controls and 3D audio.
Players of the original game won’t be surprised by anything like a new story or gameplay sections, but the quality of life and technological improvements could very well equate to a unique experience over the first iteration. In fact, the game now has such modern tie to it that it’s added the “Part 1” to its title, really pushing the fact that it’s a part of a series now. A series that’s coming to HBO as a TV show as well, so it’s obviously a good time to do more than just re-release the original game to entice the watchers of the show (coming 2023) to jump in.
The Last of Us Part 1 launches exclusively on PS5 on September 2, 2022.
