After watching the trailer, I hope it’s not the last case
During Microsoft’s Xbox Showcase this week, the company lent some time to a very cool new project from developers Plot Twist. The Last Case of Benedict Fox is a cinematic “metroidvania meets Lovecraft” that follows Mr Fox as he and is bound demon companion examine the lives of the recently deceased, solving unfinished mysteries in the process. What happened to his father, and how will it affect everything in his world?
The 2.5D action and platforming mix with heavy amounts of Metroid-style exploration to craft a story that bounces back and forth, resolving as Fox gains more access to the memories of the deceased he comes across. The early twentieth century setting, complete with East Coast fashion and architecture, combines with a dark, undulating demonic underworld for a game that feels like The Great Gatsby lives within the Necronomicon.
The Last Case of Benedict Fox bangs on a lot of our bullet points for aesthetic, gameplay, and narrative, and we can’t wait for it to hit our eyeballs. It arrives on Xbox Series, Game Pass, and PC in Spring 2023.
