The glass is halfcab full
One of the most intriguing games at this year’s Devolver Digital Direct 2022: Marketing Countdown to Marketing (!) was undoubtedly Skate Story. The game, developed by Sam Eng, puts players in the shoes of a demon trying to save their existence. To do so, they have to eat the moon. To do that, they have to journey around the underworld and defeat other demons. To do that, they have to ride a skateboard and perform tricks.
Yes, it’s a weirdly alluring premise with a lot of layers already, but perhaps the most interesting part is that the demon is made of “glass and pain.”
Land a trick wrong and we shatter into a million pieces. Land a great trick and we have the ability to help others or navigate the strange locales we come across. The joy isn’t just in the idea, but seeing it all in motion. The game utilizes the glass aesthetic, alongside moody lighting and a chilled out soundtrack, to really emphasize the surreal nature of it all. It’s VERY COOL to see it all take place on the screen.
If this isn’t what skateboarding under the heavy influence of drugs is like, I wouldn’t know what would be.
Skate Story is scheduled to release on PC in 2023.
