The cover of Madden 23 honors the namesake
John Madden, the legendary NFL coach, announcer, and sports video game mascot, passed away late last year. Even though he was originally known for football, he arguably redefined sports video games — the genre wouldn’t be the same without his impact. And while the series has had his name attached to it for a few decades, it usually hosts a cover athlete that’s currently playing the sport.
Now, to celebrate his life and legacy, Electronic Arts is putting the big guy back on the front of the box where he belongs, for the first time in a long time. Madden NFL 23 will launch later this year with a few variant covers, all featuring the coach, alongside some new gameplay capabilities. This year, exclusively on the current gen PS5 & Xbox Series X, the game will include FieldSENSE, a method by which on-field players will more accurately animate and fight for space on the field. Essentially, they’ll know where they’re supposed to be, and where they’re going, to be in the right sport for a pass or to fight for extra inches on the turf.
Madden NFL 23 launches for PlayStation and Xbox platforms on August 19th.
