A DESK JOB IN THE PORTALVERSE

We’re back in the world of Portal and Half-Life, as Valve have released Aperture Desk Job to celebrate the launch of the Steam Deck. The free game experience is designed to be a sort of tour of the new portable PC. It’s a glorified tech demo, much like that little built-in “how-to” we used to get on the very old Apple II GS in our elementary school’s computer lab.

The app throughs players (users?) behind a desk as they fiddle with controls, mimicking the use of the Steam Deck that it’s meant to be played on. Aperture Desk Job can actually be played on a PC, but requires a controller — sorry, keyboard warriors. And while it’s technically in the Portalverse, it’s really not all that amazing. It’s just neat. And free!

The Steam Deck is out now, so hopefully you preordered and can get yours by Christmas 2028.
