My daughter absolutely loves What The Dub?!, the ingenious movie overdubbing game from Wide Right Interactive. The game invites several players to use their phones and write lines of dialog for often bizarre movie scenes. After a vote each round, a winner is chosen — but that doesn’t really matter, but all it takes is a stupidly hilarious line to make everyone laugh (or cry, or hurl) and that’s essentially worth the price of admission alone. The concept is terrific, and the text-to-speech technology is actually really good, providing a product that stands at the top of gaming’s modern social party experiences.
It’s clearly an MST3K/Rifftrax homage, almost begging for some sort of tie-in. That moment has arrived, as Wide Right is now partnering with the Rifftrax folk to take the game’s concept and turn it into a fully realized tie-in.
Yes, essentially you’ll be able to do the job of the show, but alongside friends and family and a heck of a lot of laughs. There are a few notable improvements from the original WTD?! game, with the big focus being remote play and Twitch integration.
From Wide Right:
- Over 250 movie clips from RiffTrax classics such as “Rollergator”, “Attack Of The Supermonsters”, and “Plan 9 From Outer Space”!
- Featuring two exciting ways to play! Write your own riff and watch your comedy genius come to life via text-to-speech. Or leave it to the pros and choose from over 2,000 expertly crafted riffs from the RiffTrax team.
- Play head-to-head with up to 6 players using any internet connected device as controller. An additional 12 audience members can also play along.
- Bring the party to your friends with support for remote games, cross play, and voice chat.
- Streamers, get your entire chat in on the action with Twitch chat voting. Additional moderation, privacy, and content tools ensure your stream remains problem-free.
I’ve already shown the trailer above to my daughter, who emphatically shrieked and became excited to play. There’s not a lot of time to wait, as the game arrives May 5th for Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam.
