Nintendo’s sports minigame collection arrives this year
Nintendo has revealed that its Wii Sports franchise is back again for another turn around the sun. The fourth iteration, now dubbed Nintendo Switch Sports, picks up on the game’s history with 6 events. While it’s not quite the full 12 sports found on the truly great Wii Sports Resort, it at least bests Wii Sports Club’s measly 5.
Anyways, back to this actual game.
Switch Sports brings in some of the more popular events, like Bowling, Tennis, and Swordplay (Chambara) but now also adds Soccer, Volleyball, and Badminton. Later in the Fall the game will add Golf via a free update. Soccer is played by sticking a Joy-Con in a leg strap, similar to the one that came with Ring Fit Adventure, while the others can be played with just one controller in hand. Winning games, taking on tasks, and doing well earns points that can be used to unlock rotating gear for the in-game avatars, which are NOT MIIS. Yes, Miis make a comeback, but they’re clearly second to the new avatar style. Sad face.
While local multiplayer was always the meat of the experience, this edition brings in some of the Wii U’s online ranking system, in which players can compete and bolster their ranks as individuals or teams as they take on opponents around the world, hoping to get to Pro level.
For players eager to take the game for a spin, an online network test will take place next week for a few specific days & hours. Nintendo Switch Sports arrives April 29th.
