Splatoon 3 shines a light on its big Salmon Run horde mode update

Salmon Run is secretly one of the best co-op horde modes out there, and it’s getting better

One of the secret best horde modes in gaming isn’t found in Call of Duty’s zombies, but in Nintendo’s own Splatoon series. The Salmon Run co-op mode launched first in Splatoon 2, and was immediately a novel concept that is arguably enjoyed as much as the game’s main online component. The mode has players team up in groups of four to collect Salmonid eggs as the beasts attack. Eggs are dropped into a big tank in the middle of the stage, usually with a numbered goal. Now, the company has revealed more about what the next iteration of Salmon Run is bringing to Splatoon 3.

Titled “Salon Run: Next Wave” the updated mode will include more varied traversal, more verticality, and even new positional points, such as the tops of pillars. Brand new bosses, like the Fish Stick and the Flipper-Flopper, allow for giant drops of eggs, and there’s even a kaiju-sized boss teased towards the end of the clip.

The bigger and more varied stages will mean that getting back to the hub will be a little more difficult, so players can now launch their collected golden eggs into the tanks — or better yet, to each other if someone is a better collector and a teammate is a better defender.

Splatoon 3‘s launch timeframe has also been revealed out of its general “2022” timing to “Summer 2022.” Expect more info on the multiplayer, single player, and hub aspects of the game as its release nears.
