The fabled remaster of the classic JRPG is no longer a fairy tale
Circle April 7th for your time & astral-plane traveling joys. Chrono Cross is getting a remaster. The news came by way of Nintendo’s latest Direct, in which the game’s existence was officially revealed. Over the last year, hints were dropped by the original game’s creators that something was in the works, and today was the first real acknowledgement.
The remaster, known as the Radical Dreamers Edition, will bring several new and improved features to the game, which originally appeared on PlayStation 1. Much like the recent Final Fantasy remasters, the 3D polygons have been given HD makeovers, alongside reorchestrated music and text. Here’s the list of the improvements:
- 3D models converted to HD
- Brand new artwork and character redesign by Nobuteru Yuuki
- Refined background music by Yasunori Mitsuda
- Switch enemy encounters on or off
- Background filter feature
- Battle enhancement features
- Auto-battle function
- French, Italian, German and Spanish localization now added
- Switch between imitation pixel font and HD font
- Players can choose between playing with original or updated graphics
It’s worth noting that the shifting between classic and modern modes is an all-or-nothing event, so you can’t JUST adjust the fonts and not the music, for instance. Most intriguingly is the including of the game’s pseudo prequel, Radical Dreamers, a text adventure that never arrived in the West.
Chrono Cross: Radical Dreamers Edition lands on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam on April 7, 2022.
