More video games emphasize the “video” part

With the holidays behind us, the beginning of the year usually means television shows are returning from breaks or kicking up their seasons into full gear. It also usually means new shows pop up, especially with the reality that streaming has fully taken over. Thankfully for video game fans, that means a slew of new gaming-related shows are on the way soon.

Netflix’s Cuphead series is finally ready. The show mixes classic Disney and modern Spongebob styles of animation and slapstick comedy, and drizzles in some actually dark concepts. Seriously, just think about all of the issues with the Devil and talking mugs. The Cuphead Show will bring Cuphead, Mugman, and more when it hits the streaming giant on February 18th.

Meanwhile, just a couple weeks earlier, classic Sega Dreamcast game Shenmue is getting its turn at a TV series. Shenmue the Animation will follow the plot of the original game over 13 episodes. Developed by Sega’s Yu Suzuki, the game was a success critically, but never actually made a profit. It did retain a cult following, though, and spawned a couple of sequels, the latest of which, Shenmue III, finally launched in 2019 after a decade in development hell. Thankfully, it won’t be that long to enjoy more Shenmue as the animated series hits Adult Swim and Crunchyroll on February 5th.
