Arena combat in a galaxy far, far away
The next Star Wars game isn’t a massive 3rd person adventure, or a giant 4K HDR game-as-a-service built on the core of Battlefront, it’s a multiplayer arena fighter coming to Switch and mobile platforms.
Zynga’s Star Wars: Hunters was announced earlier this year, though information has been fairly sparse since then. The latest video, however, drops a firm look at the gameplay. Set soon after the events of Return of the Jedi, the game will focus on 4v4 arena combat and take place in familiar locations throughout Star Wars canon. Sure, it’s trying to capitalize on the Valorant and Overwatch crowd, but the goofy side characters in Hunters might be fan service enough to keep it on players’ minds for a while — especially if the developers plan to continue to support it.
Though launching on mobile and Switch may seem like a weird decision, it’s also a sort of test bed to see how seriously a game like this could take. If it does well, there’s not doubt that Disney would look to the genre with a little more deliberation, perhaps something like a Battleworlds IP that spans across not only Marvel properties but continually pulls in characters and settings from other Disney-owned universes.
Star Wars: Hunters launches in 2022 for Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android.
