The Playdate handheld console is delayed to 2022

Supply shortages strike again

The Playdate, also known as “the most intriguing video game device in a long time,” is getting delayed.

At this point, you know why: post-pandemic supply shortages. Panic, the developer and manufacturer of the device, also wants you to know that another reason for the delay is that there’s been a battery issue, too. In an email to those who preordered, the company described the battery problems as a batch of the consoles receiving a failing battery. This halted production as the company looked to replace the consoles affected. That combination of factors unfortunately means that several of the original shipment orders won’t make their designated timing. Orders for 2021 are now pushed to early 2022, with a domino affect of delays down the preorder line.

The Playdate works via buttons and a crank on the side, with “seasons” of gaming content revealed as ownership time progresses. That way you feel like you’re always playing something new. It’s a cool idea, but one that we’ll ultimately have to wait a few more months to experience.
