The Super Mario movie arrives Holiday 2022

During its big September Nintendo Direct, Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto revealed some big news around the upcoming, long-in-production Super Mario movie. The first is the date: Holiday 2022. The movie, produced by Illumination Entertainment (Minions, Sing), will launch on December 21st in the US, with more info around other dates coming later. That puts it square in the Christmas timeframe, which will be perfect for families hoping to head to theaters, and perfect to rake in some big bucks at the box office. It also puts it up against Avatar 2 and Aquaman 2, which launch the week prior, so it’ll be some big competition for eyeballs and time.

Miyamoto also revealed much of the cast that will be involved, including some giant star power in some wild roles. Mario and crew will be fully voiced for the feature length film, so Charles Martinet’s brand of short quips may not cut it. No worries, though, as he’ll be popping up in other places in the film under undisclosed roles.

Here’s the main voice cast:

Mario: Chris Pratt

Peach: Anya Taylor-Joy

Luigi: Charlie Day

Bowser: Jack Black

Toad: Keegan-Michael Key

Donkey Kong: Seth Rogen

Cranky Kong: Fred Armisen

Kamek: Kevin Michael Richardson

Spike: Sebastian Maniscalco

It’s worth noting that even though Mario tends to be depicted with a stereotypical Italian accent, the role has been portrayed by voice actors (and wrestlers!) of all backgrounds, usually putting their own spin on the character. We’ll see how Chris Pratt and crew handle the legacy next year.
