Older GTA games could arrive as soon as this year
Rumors are running rampant that remasters of some classic Grand Theft Auto games could be on the way. A report out of Kotaku details the news that Grand Theft Auto III, Vice City, and San Andreas are being updated/remade for modern devices. The report indicates that Rockstar Dundee (formerly Ruffian Games) will be handling the games, which will utilize some of the older visuals alongside new Unreal Engine updates. It’s unlikely that these are full remakes, instead using modern engines and techniques to bring the games to widescreens and HD platforms, fixing textures and lighting, and improving controls.
The games were the first in 3D perspective in the GTA series, launching in 2001, 2002, and 2004 respectively, and were some of the most popular PlayStation 2 games of all time. They’ve since been released on multiple platforms, including iOS and Steam. The report notes that these new versions will hit everything, from PlayStation and Xbox to Switch, PC and mobile. Maybe even your fancy new toaster.
Rumors began to pop up over the last several months after Take Two had been mostly silent about Rockstar’s plans outside of GTA Online and Red Dead Redemption Online updates, with their latest earnings interaction alluding to unannounced remasters/ports on the way for this year.
