Slay monsters in AR, like Henry Cavill intended
While WitcherCon itself won’t have any new games announced, there’s actually a brand new Witcher game already in the works — and it’s launching this month! The Witcher: Monster Slayer is an AR monster hunting/fighting/slaying game for mobile platforms. Developed by CD Projekt Red’s Spokko subsidiary, “MonSlay” is set long before Geralt was even a thought in the minds of his predecessors. Much like Pokemon Go, the game will overlay fantastical elements and monsters into our world, and asks us to travel and destroy beasts everywhere.
Spokko are trying to set the game apart from other AR experiences by including more of a storyline and questing system, in hopes that fans of the series will want to come back for the lore tied to it.
Here’s where things get a little weird.
As the game explains it, it’s set long before Geralt existed. Also, the game is set in our time, with monsters and elements overlayed onto our world. Does that mean that The Witcher actually takes place… in our future? Are we just living a pre-Witcher world? Is Henry Cavill destined to fall into some cursed slumber and awaken in a few thousand years, ready to become the actual Geralt?
The Witcher: Monster Slayer launches July 21st for both iOS and Android, but don’t think of it as a game: think of it as a warning.
