Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut formally announced

Ghost of Tsushima Director’s Cut formally announced

Definitive version of the game comes to PS4 and PS5 this year

Ghost of Tsushima on the PS4 was one of the best games of 2020, garnering awards for its plot, gameplay, and overall magnificence. But it’s missing one thing: a native PlayStation 5 version. Today, Sony has announced that the game is coming to its newest platform, alongside the PS4, in a special Director’s Cut version. This new edition will bring visual and gameplay tweaks, especially to the PS5, but also an entirely new location to explore. Iki island will bring a whole new story and characters, techniques, and equipment, alongside the environment. Even more interestingly, the PS5 version’s horsepower will allow for accurate Japanese lip syncing during the cinematics.

The upgraded visuals alone should be exciting, but the convoluted pricing may leave a little to be desired. The Director’s Cut will cost $69.99 on PS5 and $59.99 on PS4. On the PS4, the Director’s cut will be sold as a $19.99 expansion on the platform, or $9.99 if you own the PS4 version of the Cut and want to upgrade to the PS5 version. Finally, owners of the *original* Ghost of Tsushima game on PS4 will need to shell out $29.99 if they want to upgrade to the Director’s Cut on the PS5.

It’s a stark reminder that Sony still hasn’t quite figured out the pricing scheme for moving from PS4 to its PS5, something that Microsoft has essentially been doing for free. With the PlayStation 5 still so difficult to get a hold of, staying on the PS4 version is likely the only option until the console is more readily available later.

Here’s a pro-tip: If you poke around enough Ghost of Tsushima on the PS4 can be found for prices as low as $29.99, if not lower once the new version shows up, so dishing out the thirty bucks to get the game bumped into the PS5 DC version may not be that difficult to swallow. But if you already own it, you’re likely double- and triple-dipping into the ghostly waters.
