But why not for consoles yet, Squeenix?!
Square Enix has revealed that its Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster series is set to debut this month, July, on Steam and mobile platforms. The first three games in the series (FF I-III) will hit this month, July, followed by IV-VI later this Summer and Fall.
On Steam and mobile.
Not on Switch or other consoles.
Now, yes, we can play the games on mobile, but as someone who already owns the first Final Fantasy (twice!) and several Dragon Quest games on iOS I can confirm that the experience is less than satisfactory. Granted the visuals will be much improved (expect for that font) but the controls leave things lacking, especially when you’re fumbling with fat fingers on a screen, covering up those improved visuals.
Steam will be a fine platform, and we’re sure people may mod the heck out of the games, but there’s nothing that we all want more than to play the series on a console. There’s a different feel to the experience when we boot up the games on our TV sets than on our 4K computer screens. We tend to forget that the originals of this era were designed to be played on sets, with friends huddling around the screen, sitting on the floor, and using controllers wired to the console. The games were designed to be theater-like storytelling, with Final Fantasy VI especially providing some incredible musical numbers and scenes.
Put these games where they belong, Square Enix.
The individual pricing is all over the place, too, with all six costing over $70 as a bundle. Let’s hope there’s an actual collection on the way that’s yet to be announced. I want to play these again on my TV while my family experiences them for the first time.
