Relive the original Final Fantasy struggle in a whole new way
The original Final Fantasy set the standard for console JRPGs. Sure, Dragon Quest came before it, but Final Fantasy was a hail mary toss that landed with precision, launching a series that’s dominated the genre around the world since. When we look back at that game, we respectfully realize how antiquated its gameplay mechanisms are.
Well, Square Enix has announced a (sort of) remake of that first game. Or a side story. Or a prequel. Or… something? we’re not quite sure what Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is, but it seems to step into the world of the original (including its Chaos/Garland antagonist). From Square Enix:
Jack and his allies, Ash and Jed, burn with the resolve to defeat Chaos as they throw open the gates to the Chaos Shrine. Yet doubts remain – are they truly the Warriors of Light the prophecy foretold? Step into a world of dark fantasy and revel in the exhilarating action – packed battles.
The action-RPG take will let players utilize some of the jobs from previous games in the series, such as Black Mage and Dragoon, but throw a more leather & v-neck shirt take into the mix. It’s a jarring take on the original’s premise, which was more sword & sorcery than anything else. Series Producer Tetsuya Nomura is involved with the game, alongside developer Team Ninja. More details on the story will be revealed at a later date,
The game launches in 2022 for Xbox and PlayStation platforms, as well as PC. A demo is now up on PlayStation until June 24th.
