Square Enix announces Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster

Cleaning up the first six games

There’s a lot that can be said about the current re-releases of the original 2D Final Fantasy games. There’s an overwhelming sense of disappointment in their translation, both from a visual and technical standpoint, that has somewhat tarnished their legacies; you can’t get a great version of any of the games unless you have an original console (or a Gameboy Advance). The same issue has existed with the Dragon Quest games, but at least we’re getting something new in that area.

So, when Square Enix announced at its E3 event that there are “Pixel Remaster” versions on the way, fans were excited to hear the news!

Until they saw that the platforms they truly wanted, consoles, were nowhere to be mentioned. Instead, the games, which feature cleaned up visuals reminiscent of the original 8- and 16-bit styles and controls that are much more in line with the menu design fans remember. But the fact that they’re currently announced for just mobile and Steam is a bit of a bummer. There’s no release date yet, but the games are planned to be released individually.

More info will be arriving at a later date.
