Visual upgrades, ships, and grappling hooks round out the first look at the competitive play
At its E3 showcase, Microsoft gave a glimpse into the multiplayer for the upcoming Halo Infinite. The mode, which will be free when it launches, will put players into Spartan boots as they fight across traditional Halo modes in non-traditional ways.
The trailer revealed some of the locations that players will experience, such as a massive outdoor area and a tower-infused set of buildings. The visuals seem to have been adjusted, possibly in response to the negative feedback from last year’s reveal. Halo wasn’t always the highest fidelity game visually, instead focusing on performance, but the improvement was there. Perhaps the most interesting aspect was the new grappling hook, which will appear in both the campaign and multiplayer (though it will function somewhat differently in both). In one clip, a player grabs onto a an oncoming ship and pulls themselves up on top of it, ripping out their opponent and stealing the ride.
Microsoft also showed a short campaign related video, in which Master Chief comes upon a new AI replacement for Cortana, who was “deleted” after going rogue. This will seemingly be a big part of the Halo plot, and more will be revealed about that later this year.
Halo Infinite‘s multiplayer is scheduled to launch Holiday 2021 alongside the campaign portion, both of which will hit Xbox platforms, PC, Steam, and Game Pass on day one.
