Once an April Fool’s joke, now April Fool’s woke
PlatinumGames is known for the often offbeat or unexpected projects that it gets itself into (remember Transformers: Devastation?). The company will often even drop fake info about nonexistent concepts just to have a go at its fanbase. But now, one of those jokes has actually become… something.
Back in April 2020 (which is actually measured as decades ago at this point) the company revealed a “joke” game, Sol Cresta, as a sequel to 80s shooters Moon Cresta and Terra Cresta. But now, haha, the joke is actually on us as they’ve decided to actually make the game — and its coming this year. Sol Cresta is a retro shooter, a part of something that Platinum is calling its “Neo-Classic Arcade” and designed around nostalgia for quarter munching. The vertical space-plane shmup retains bullet hell design queues and plenty of explosions. It may be a side project, but the fact that the company is releasing it at all is something of a flex.
Sol Cresta arrives for Switch, PS4, PC and Steam later this year.
