The new controllers add the DualSense’s increased haptic features
Hot on the heels of announcing that a PSVR successor was in the works last month, Sony has taken to their PlayStation blog to drop details of the new controllers. The original PSVR used the PS3’s Move controllers, which launched in 2010. While their glowing ball presence was a staple within the consumer VR community, they were basic at best, and with new platforms comes new needs and advancements.
The first thing one will notice about the new controllers is their spherical, wrap-around shape. They’re now meant to house out hands, not just be a flashlight we hold. The shape mimics the direction that other VR controllers are heading, and incorporates the tracking mechanism within its base. This time around, the headset tracks the controllers, not a camera. The form is also meant to allow for a more balanced and natural feel to interaction.
The new PSVR’s controllers utilize features that first appeared in the DualSense, such as adaptive triggers and haptic touch. They also include a “finger touch” interface, which detects your finger placement without the need to push in a button. Analog sticks and traditional buttons and triggers are included, too, for a rounded-out experience within games.
There’s no launch date for the new VR tech, nor a full reveal date, but they’re moving pretty fast in getting some of the more important information out there. 2021 is still a long year, so maybe we’ll see more later on.
