Sony bolsters its eSports portfolio with fighting tournament organizer
Sony and RTS, a venture born out of Endeavour’s eSports arm, have announced a joint venture in their purchase of the famed EVO fighting series. EVO is the premiere gaming fighting tournament network, held around the world (and online over the last year), that is home to thousands of competitors and millions of fans. It’s become one of the most important eSports events in the world, and Sony has now brought it into the PlayStation family.
This is an important piece of Sony’s plan, as it works to combat the recent growth of Microsoft’s Xbox content platforms like Game Pass. It is working to differentiate its offering and spread its reach into new venues and aspects of gaming. Though 2020 was a storm of issues, EVO 2021 will be taking place online, and feature Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter, Tekken and more games in its lineup this Summer.
