New company will release Atari 2600 games

The first game I ever fell in love with was Donkey Kong. I’d spend quarters playing and hours watching the arcade cabinet, and when we got out Atari 2600 it was the first game we purchased. Garry Kitchen was the developer behind the game (he shared a terrific story about its creation and limits on Medium) and coincidentally the creator of the first piece of game making software I ever used, GameMaker. He was among the pioneers of early game development in the US, alongside his brother Dan and David Crane.

Now, the three are working together to launch a new development company based solely on creating games for the classic consoles. Audacity Games will produce projects for the Atari 2600, and even on cartridge. “With the popularity of retro video games, we saw an opportunity to create new titles for these still popular systems”, Kitchen writes in their press release. The team obviously loved the challenge of creating games for Atari era, having worked for Activision in that publisher’s infancy, so heading back to that time could lead to even more cool ideas. The carts will be playable on the old consoles, as well as modern emulator devices like RetroNs, and a purchase of one of the games is planned to include a digital version/code as well.

Retro and nostalgia are in full swing as players are interested in reliving the memories of their childhood. Audacity Games might be joining the fray at the perfect time.
