Well, this is awkward
It’s been six years since EA Sports was involved in a golf game, and now the company has announced a return to the links. The game, currently titled PGA Tour, is being designed for “next gen” consoles (read: PS5, Xbox Series X|S). EA hasn’t announced a release date, but don’t expect it to launch any time soon. We’re not expecting it until late 2022 at the earliest.
The news comes just as 2K Sports added Tiger Woods to its official sponsorship side for its own PGA Tour game series, starting with next year.
So, here’s the rundown: EA is releasing a game titled PGA Tour, which it last produced under the Rory McIlroy PGA Tour name in 2016 after dropping Tiger Woods from their sponsorship. Take Two is currently runs the PGA Tour 2K game series, which began with 2020’s entry as a successor to The Golf Club, a series by developer HB Studios — who once worked on the EA’s Tiger Woods PGA Tour series before spinning off on their own to develop the Golf Club and before being bought by 2K just a couple of weeks ago — and will bring in Tiger Woods as part of its brand.
Whew.
Good luck with the sand wedge.
