Google’s game platform pitch turns into a bust
Google Stadia is losing one of the reasons that drove the platform initially: original games. The company has announced that it will be shuttering its internal development studios, with some of those affected devs rolled into other aspects of the project and company. Some, likely, won’t be able to keep their jobs. This comes after a Kotaku report on the news, noting that current projects that were close to completion may still see the light of day, but others could be lost to time.
The Stadia streaming service launched in late 2019, with Google championing not only its own original titles but those of third parties as well. The robustness of the service likely isn’t an issue, as Google is well equipped to stream entertainment, after all. The big concerns lay with its all-over-the-place pricing scheme and ISPs capping data and speeds. The platform will continue for now, but who knows what that may look like in the next year as an intriguing piece of the package is now gone.
