With or without the NCAA, digital college sports is back
Electronic Arts has announced that its take on digital college football is coming back. EA Sports College Football will pick up the path that NCAA Football blazed up until 2014.
It’s worth noting that the NCAA name is nowhere to be found on the announcement, indicating that the collegiate league may not be fully in line with the project yet. The issue may be related to recent rulings that allow collegiate athletes to profit off of their likenesses, something that the NCAA itself has frowned upon for years as it takes potential revenue away from the organization and puts it directly in the student-athletes’ hands.
What may likely happen is an NCAA-less game that features several of the top conferences and schools (potentially bearing player likenesses). EA is working with CLC, which will give it access to logos, stadiums, uniforms and more, and notes that there’s still quite a way to go before any sort of release date is announced.
Whew. It’s a lot to take in, once the onion peels start to be taken down, but we know one thing for certain: more football games is a good thing to have, even if just to give us a break from Madden NFL.
This story was updated to add CLC’s involvement.
