It will now cost $120 to play free game Fortnite on Xbox
Microsoft has announced a considerable price hike to its Xbox Live GOLD service. The service, which was the backbone of its online platform for gamers over nearly the last 20 years, has obviously remained at a steady price over that time, as other similar services have increased in pricing.
The new pricing is as follows:
- 1 month: $10.99 (up from $9.99)
- 3 month: $29.99 (up from $24.99)
- 6 month: $59.99 (up from $39.99)
- 12 month: $119.99 (up from $59.99) — though Microsoft isn’t listing the 1-year price anywhere
Microsoft is clearly pushing Game Pass Ultimate going forward, which bundles in Xbox Live GOLD, Game Pass, and Project xCloud streaming into one tidy package. Anyone who owns GOLD right now can transfer that time into Game Pas Ultimate at no additional cost, so if you snag a 1-year GOLD at your favorite retailer card you may have a little bit of an advantage right now over GPU members.
It’s a bit of a tough pricing pill to swallow for many parents who don’t invest in Game Pass for their kids, instead paying the base cost for online service to play Fortnite and (soon) Among Us on their Xbox consoles. Now, that price jumps from $60 to $120 to play Fortnite, a game that is free everywhere else.
