Releasing to streaming on same day as theaters
Wonder Woman 1984, the next big comic book movie release scheduled for theaters, is taking a new approach. Originally planned for a December 25th release (that’s on Christmas!) the film will now land in theaters *and* streaming service HBO Max on the same day.
And it won’t cost any extra to watch it, either, unlike what Disney+ did with Mulan earlier this year.
The news comes as a blow to the already reeling theater industry, as cinemas have been seeing 2020’s major new releases pushed into 2021 and beyond, or head directly to streaming services. Patrons are still weary to head into big enclosures with poor air circulation and plenty of strangers, it seems, so the studios are hoping that the shift to streaming will push more to subscribe to the services for the foreseeable future.
