Co-founder Joey Cuellar faces misconduct allegations
EVO Online, the event that was to replace EVO 2020 this year amid the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, has been canceled. The news comes as misconduct allegations surfaced against tournament co-founder Joey Cuellar. The EVO organizers had begun an investigation into Cuellar’s actions and placed him on administrative leave.
However, once the news broke, publishers began to pull their sponsorship of the event. NetherRealm and Capcom backed out first, then Bandai Namco followed suit. Without official sponsorship, there wouldn’t be any games.
And so, EVO is done for now. There’s no word if the tournament series will return later this year, as it had been a staple of Summer gaming, but if and when it does those involved (and those who watch) hope for a better, more positive experience.
