To replace WWE 2K series for this year
WWE 2K20 was a bit of a Montreal screw job. Fans thought they were getting a great successor to 2K19, but the sequel just wasn’t a survivor. And, with COVID-19 still a thing, it’s begun affecting game releases across the world. One of those may have been WWE 2K21, which is now no longer happening (though it technically wasn’t officially confirmed).
Don’t fret! There’s still a WWE-theme rasslin’ game coming this year, though it may not be as much of a sim as it is something akin to the now infamous Boneyard Match from this year’s Wrestlemania. Developer and port specialist Saber Interactive has announced WWE 2K Battlegrounds. The game will be an arcade-like experience, much like WWF WrestleMania: The Arcade Game from the mid-Nineties, with over-the-top attacks and outlandish sets.
The game will be much more of a pick-up-and-play experience, so that fans who are new to the series or just want some loose fun can jump in, while at the same time apparently affording depth for those that really want to go all in. Battlegrounds arrives this Fall for multiple platforms (likely modern gen, IMHO).
