COVID-19 to blame, but maybe not for the reason you were thinking
With the COVID-19 coronavirus in full swing, it’s affecting game releases left and right. The next two to fall are Sony’s Iron Man VR and The Last of Us Part 2, both delayed “indefinitely”.
Now, “indefinitely” could mean a lot of things, but the entire situation is probably due to the logistical concerns: the game is very nearly done, sources have said, but the actual production of the physical copies (BluRays, Collector’s Editions, promotional material) is likely hitting a major bump in the road. On top of that shipping and trade is being affected as well, so just getting physical product moved around would be much more difficult — Square Enix has already noted that many fans may not get Final Fantasy VII Remake until well after the launch date. “Why not just go digital” you might say? Well, with all of the contracts already brokered and orders already made for physical copies in places like Best Buy and Gamestop, going just digital first would hurt those sales big time.
This is all a bummer, sure, but the safety and health of everyone involved is most important.
