Something bigger and better, but not built in
In a message shared on Twitter, Last of Us Part II developers Naughty Dog responded to questions about the removal of multiplayer from the sequel. The mode, which proved popular amongst a set of the original games fanbase, was oddly missing from PR and previews. Now, we know why.
In short: the multiplayer concept they were developing was too big to be built into TLOU2, which is already filled to the max with the biggest single player the dev has created. Instead, the multiplayer mode will likely be spun off into something potentially a lot bigger than an addendum, but there is no timeframe for that yet.
The Last of Us Part II launches in February 2020.
