How many of you didn’t realize that Sony didn’t already own the developer?
Its okay if you didn’t. In fact, the developers have worked on some of Sony’s most beloved games and franchises, from Marvel’s Spider-man to Ratchet & Clank to Spyro to Resistance. They’ve accounted for millions of games sold and billions of dollars in revenue for the technology giant, so it’s probably fitting that they’ve officially been added as a subsidiary.
The acquisition of the company, founded in 1994 as Xtreme Software, was revealed in a press release, a follow-up blog post, tweet (see below), and more, though no monetary amount was revealed.
Insomniac will develop games exclusively for Sony hardware, presumedly for the upcoming next PlayStation device.
In a related bit of news, however, Sony Interactive Worldwide Studios chairman Shawn Layden stated to Bloomberg that though the company wants exclusive titles, it realizes that perhaps expanding their reach is also important: “…you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”
